Can I use my current kitchen stove for natural gas usage?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. A stove that uses Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a source of fuel cannot be used for natural gas purposes. You must buy a stove suitable for natural gas or do a conversion work to adapt your current stove to natural gas usage. This applies to other gas appliances too.

2.

What are the differences between natural gas and LPG?

Natural gas is lighter than air and LPG. In case of leakage, natural gas will go to the highest point possible and disperse into air as compared to LPG that will seep to the lowest level possible and linger until purged.

Natural gas contains less polluting elements such as sulphur oxides and carbon dioxide as compared to fuel oil and coal. Therefore, you will get a more efficient burning with less soot or ash with the right combination of combustion factors.

3.

How will the change from LPG to natural gas affects my cooking?

The change to natural gas will not affect your cooking.

4.

How much do I have to pay for my consumption of natural gas?

The tariff for natural gas is fashioned in a way whereby the more you use, the more you can save on your monthly bills. A minimal charge of RM10.00 per month will be imposed for natural gas consumption that is less than 10 m³. For each 1 m³ onwards, a charge of RM0.80 will be applied. On average, each house is expected to consume between 10 m³ to 15 m³ per month. Below are some examples of calculating natural gas consumption using the tariff for residential customers:

Example:  Charge:
0 - 10 m³ RM10.00
11 m³ RM10.80
12 m³ RM11.60
13 m³ RM12.40
14 m³ RM13.20
15 m³ RM14.00
16 m³ RM14.80

5.

Is it safe?

When all precautions are taken, using natural gas is safer than LPG. The amount of gas trapped in the piping within your premise is normally smaller in amount compared to the amount of LPG in a tank sitting in your kitchen.

6.

What if I want to renovate my kitchen?

If you need to extend or shorten the gas piping within your house, you may do so by engaging a gas-piping contractor. They will do the job according to your requirements and design.

7.

What to do in case of an emergency?

If you detect escaping gas in your house, evacuate the affected area and if possible, close the upstream and downstream valves to stop the gas flow to the affected area. Extinguish all open flames, prohibit smoking, and ensure that you do not operate any motor vehicles, electrical switches/appliances or any other possible ignition sources. Contact our emergency phone no.from a neighbour's house or any phone outside your house. Please refer to the Safety Advice for further details.

8.

What precautions should I take in using natural gas?

Ensure that there is enough fresh air for complete combustion where gas appliance is located. Close gas valves when gas is not in use. Just like any other utility facilities, you are advised not to tamper with gas pipes unless by qualified persons. Maintain your own gas facilities and equipment to ensure good and efficient working order at all times.
